A heartfelt message from Ron Sorenson, general manager of 98.9 KFMG:
It is with great pleasure, no small amount of pride, and, once more, a heaping helping of humility, that I share, yet again, KFMG’s success in this year’s Cityview “Best of Des Moines” Reader’s Poll. Cityview is Des Moines' entertainment/cultural publication, and has been running the “Best of…” poll since the mid ‘90s (the previous version of KFMG [’92-’96] was an early winner in the “Best Radio Station” category).
We won or placed in all three radio categories, with TWO first place finishes:
Best Radio Station
KFMG 98.9 FM
Casey Kasem, the iconic FM DJ and wise sage, once said: “Basically, radio hasn’t changed over the years. Despite all the technical improvements, it still boils down to a man or a woman and a microphone, playing music, sharing stories, talking about issues — communicating with an audience.” The audience of central Iowa likes what it hears at KFMG 98.9 FM. The listener-supported station has repeatedly been labeled as the best in the area by CITYVIEW readers, and this year is no different. KFMG 98.9 FM is the Best Radio Station around, according to Best Of Des Moines voters. www.kfmg.org
Runners-up: KXNO 1460, STAR 102.5 (KNXO is iHeartRadio’s sports talker, and Star 102.5 is Saga’s Hot AC)
Best Radio Voice that Turns You On
Scott Davis – KFMG 98.9 FM
Congratulations to Scott Davis. The local on-air voice at KFMG has won the title of Des Moines’ Best Radio Voice that Turns You On. Central Iowa has spoken, and Scott “The Hat” gets the engines running as the host of Sunday Morning Jazz each week from 6-10 a.m. www.kfmg.org
Runners-up: Heather Burnside, Moose in the Morning – LAZER 103.3
In addition, Brian Joens, our new music specialty show host (Dirt Road Radio) and weekend evening announcer, was runner-up for “Best Radio Personality.”
This marks the 10th consecutive year that Cityview readers have chosen KFMG as “Des Moines’ Best Radio Station.”
Keep in mind that this all happens at a non-profit, non-commercial, Community Radio Station with all of the power of a large light bulb (100 watts), a marketing and promotional budget of $0, and a TOTAL annual budget less than most morning shows in the market.
Our thanks to the hard-working staff of VOLUNTEER announcers and hosts at KFMG, and to our dedicated and supportive listeners.
In addition to the station sweep, a number of other KFMG volunteers and “station friends” did well on Tuesday night, too.
Kitchen Insider host George Formaro’s six restaurants picked up 10 “Best Of…” awards—including a first place. Congrats to George, and the entire Orchestrate crew (Orchestrate, which operates the Formaro restaurants, has been one of our longest and most consistent supporters. Thank you to Paul Rottenberg, Jeff Hunter and ALL at Orchestrate).
Former KFMG Iowa Homegrown (our Sunday afternoon three-hour program featuring Iowa music) host and jam-band keyboard wiz Gwen Page’s Fong’s Pizza won three Best Of awards, including a first place (their egg-roll pizza is to die for).
Jason Walsmith, one of the current hosts for Iowa Homegrown, picked up the “Best Local Band” Award as a member of The Nadas—long time KFMG favorites.
James Biehn, another former host in the Iowa Homegrown rotation, picked up an award in the “Best Local Musician” category. You rock (and/or roll), James!
And KFMG Board member (and frequent interview guest) Lee Ann Bakros (Marketing Director of The Playhouse) was instrumental in the Des Moines Community Playhouse winning the “Best Local Theatrical Value” award.
While the Cityview poll, which produced over 10,000 responses, is NOT a scientific survey of the market, only one survey may be filled out per computer, so this suggests that KFMG has a significant audience, and one which is active AND supportive of the station.
And, once again, our thanks to all of our friends in the local music and cultural community, AND to our friends and supporters in the national music community. Without the support of all of you, this would not have been possible.

PS – In a VERY timely placement, the earlier incarnations of KFMG were featured in a Cityview article by central Iowa filmmaker (and host of KFMG’s Iowa Basement Tapes program), Kristian Day.
